Hells canyon is carved into the heart of the Columbia basin like a divine inscription,
in being the deepest river gorge in North America with an average depth of 5,500 feet.
The Nez Perce people call it the Place Of Shadows, a name far more understanding
of the land's capacity to hold darkness and light. Early inhabitants hunted, gathered,
found shelter from winter, and marked rocks with their sign. Pictographs, petroglyphs,
pit houses and burial mounds fill the canyon with watchful spirits. Some come for the
whitewater adventure, others for the solitude of wilderness.
